National Night Out (NNO) Block Parties will bring people together in a casual, fun way to become better acquainted, strengthen neighborhood spirit, and get information on how to protect themselves, their children, and their property. The Anderson Mill Neighborhood Association and Anderson Mill Limited District are supporting and promoting these NNO activities.
It is easy for YOU to be a part of this important event by hosting a block party on your street - you can invite your closest neighbors or the entire block. The goal is to get to know the folks who live around you, communicate what is happening on your street, and see how you can help make your neighborhood safer. Your party can be simple, with a few activities and light snacks, or you can create a larger event tailored to your neighbors such as a pot luck dinner, cookout, or a neighborhood walk. From 7:00 to 9:00 pm, residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside with their neighbors to send a message to criminals that citizens are involved in keeping our area safe. These events will occur simultaneously across the city and across the state. Last year there were 13 NNO block parties in Anderson Mill and over 400 in Austin - that's outstanding! Let's beat that record this year - sign up online at http://austintexas.gov/department/national-night-out. The deadline to register is September 9, 2016. You can also download the NNO application at the website to fill in and submit via regular mail (note-we are in Region 2).
To help make the planning simple, AMLD and AMNA will provide instructions, ideas, invitation forms, giveaways, and safety brochures to residents who have block parties. The Austin Police Department will supply signs and other items for block parties. Donations from area merchants will provide refreshments to supplement what party hosts provide. Call the AMLD office at 512-258-4104 when you have submitted your form to get on the distribution list for your free items (first 10 to call). Check the website www.amld.org for NNO information. Visits at your party by police officers, EMS, fire fighters, and sheriff's deputies can be requested and are always a big hit with kids of all ages - who doesn't want to climb on a fire truck?
