Oak wilt is a disease affecting oak trees caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum (previously known as Ceratocystis fagacearum). Symptoms vary by tree species but generally consist of leaf discoloration, wilt, defoliation, and death. The fungus spreads from diseased to healthy trees overland by insects or other airborne vectors and underground by naturally grafted tree roots. Oak trees make up 10% of Austin's tree canopy. If left unchecked oak wilt can cause severe and costly impacts in our community.
Below we have attempted to provide reliable resources to educate our residents about the spread and prevention of oak wilt.
